Our Response to Education PDF Print E-mail

When a child receives an education through the assistance of Baptist Haiti Mission, they are given that important key, but they also receive so much more.

In the 1940's, when our first missionaries arrived, only 2 in every 100 Haitians could read. Over the years since then, missions have played a vital role in raising that low 2% literacy rate to over 50%.

Education has been a major priority. Because right away it was clear that not being able to read greatly hindered the potential spiritual and human growth of the people of Haiti, we aimed:

  • To offer strong Christian education through elementary school that would help build stability and provide opportunity.
  • To improve teachers and teaching methods
  • To improve rural educational facilities
  • To monitor and measure the learning process

Moreover, to ensure proper physical and mental development, preschool children in the Fermathe area schools are vaccinated against diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, typhoid, and TB, and receive simple medical and dental care. Many schools provide free, nutritious hot lunches for each child every day.
