On January 12 at 4:53 p.m., Sauver was in a building in Carrefour Bete, just outside Port-au-Prince. As the massive earthquake shook the island, the building collapsed on him, crushing his right leg. Sauver doesn't know who rescued him, but he knows that two people helped him escape the building and laid him in the street. Two other people, also strangers, took Sauver to a local hospital where is right leg was amputated.
When he was released from the hospital, Sauver continued to be in extreme pain, so he came to our mission hospital seeking help and refuge. His house has been destroyed and he has no place else to go.
All five of Sauver's children survived the earthquake, but he still hasn't heard from his extended family. They remain missing.
When Sauver's parents named him, they had no idea the symbolism his name would carry in the face of unfathomable destruction. Sauver's name means "savior." And on February 1, Sauver turned to his personal Savior, Jesus.
As he shared his story with one of our volunteers, she sensed from his answers that he was not yet a Christian. And so she shared the Good News of Jesus, our Master Healer, with him.
"I believe God saved my life," Sauver says. "Without God I wouldn't be here."
Sauver saw the true healing that Christ could offer to him, and he turned his heart to the Lord. Today, Sauver carries his name as a constant reminder that he is healed by His Savior, Jesus Christ.

Safe in His Dwelling - Sheltering the Homeless |
|
|
|
"For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle and set me high upon a rock" (Psalm 27:5, NIV)
In the rural community of Haute Pereaux, more than 90 people have found safety and shelter in the local church. The church opened its doors to families who were left homeless after the earthquake. And he wasn't alone. In the rural communities affected by the January 12 earthquake, BHM's partnering churches have opened their doors to serve their neighbors in this time of greatest need. We rejoice in the church's ongoing testimony of love and hospitality.
"I was a stranger and you invited me in... I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me" (Matthew 25:34,40)
Seeking to help their communities rebuild, our partnering pastors and other leaders have also begun bringing lists of families who need our help to rebuild. Many have been left completely homeless, while many more have suffered significant damage to their homes. The numbers are staggering.
We are estimating that materials alone for rebuidling in these communities will cost more than $2 million. Yet, we are confident the Lord will provide through generous friends and supporters like you. He will keep us "safe in his dwelling," hide families "in the shelter of his tabernacle," and set Haiti "high upon a rock."

Distributing Food to Hungry Quake Survivors |

BHM has already begun moving into the next stages of relief for the survivors of Haiti's devastating earthquake. For more than 60 years, we've worked to establish strong partnerships with local pastors and leaders throughout the island nation, ensuring that we work with godly, compassionate people who understand the needs of their communities. The pastors understand better than anyone the people in their communities and they are able to distribute food and supplies in an orderly, humane manner.
So when it came time to begin distributing food to rural villages, we wasted no time in getting up and running. Today, we reached out to Bolosse and the surrounding areas of Fermathe, BHM's headquarters.
Pastor Soimeus from the Fermathe church organized the local food distribution. He and several other members of the church gave food to approximately 100 families who went in one by one to receive their bags of food.

Immediate Needs for Haiti Relief Work |
|
|
|
|
With emergency relief of food, water, shelter, hygiene products and medical supplies continuing to arrive at our mission headquarters in Haiti, our missionaries and staff are working nonstop to distribute the critical supplies to those who need it most. BHM's roll in relief distribution is especially vital as we serve many rural and isolated communities who have been badly damaged by the earthquake but remain outside of the main relief routes.
We have also started working with local community leaders and partnering pastors on plans for rebuilding damaged schools, churches, and homes.
There are several important tools we need to be able to continue serving our Haitian brothers and sisters in this critical time. To donate any of the items on this list, please contact our US office.
