Earthquake Survivors Turn to Christ Amidst Great Suffering PDF Print E-mail

IMG_0384bWhen a person has lost children, home, and livelihood and sustained great injuries, we can understand if they greet God with anger and resentment. This seems a natural reaction. Not so for countless survivors from Haiti's devastating earthquake.

Just as Job praised God amidst his great suffering, Haitians are turning daily to find solace and salvation in Jesus Christ. Songs spring up in the hospital, praising God for his provision.

As for me, I know that my Redeemer lives,
And at the last He will take His stand on the earth.
Even after my skin is destroyed,
Yet from my flesh I shall see God;
(Job 19:25-26, NIV)

Since the earthquake rocked Haiti a week ago today, destroying homes, claiming tens of thousands of lives, and crushing Haiti's already crumbled economy, survivors are testifying to God's goodness in preserving their lives.  As they accept Christ, they are saying "If God saved me, He has a purpose for my life."

To date, chaplains from the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association have prayed with more than 30 men and women from our hospital who have chosen to accept Jesus Christ and serve our Lord. Praise God! Even in total devastation, especially in total devastation, His hand is at work.

Partnering Pastors Lose Family in Earthquake PDF Print E-mail

The BHM partnering pastors are heroic on an ordinary day, facing countless challenges from lack of transportation to resource shortages as they minister to isolated communities throughout Haiti. In the wake of the terrible earthquake that struck January 12, 2010, these servants of Christ have been living testimonies to the power of God's grace.

Many of the local pastors we work with have lost their homes, livestock, and worldly possessions. The most devastating loss to them has been the deaths of their family members.

Because many of the communities we work with are isolated, news is just beginning to trickle in from the pastors. We have heard from a few who lost their children, grandchildren, and other relatives. Please hold these godly men close in your prayers as their hearts are breaking.

  • Pastor Venel Metyer from Anse Rouge lost a total of 5 children and grandchildren.
  • Pastor Fritz Metyer from Atrel has lost 1 child.
  • Pastor Luc has lost 2 children.
  • Pastor LeBeu has lost several relatives.

We will continue to keep you updated on other pastors and ministry partners as we get word.

You can be a source of encouragement in this time of loss.

US Doctor Gives Own Blood for Earthquake Victim PDF Print E-mail

DSC00589Alexis, an earthquake victim, was suffering from internal bleeding when our medical team performed an emergency operation on her last night, January 17, 2010.

She wasn't expected to survive the night. But Alexis did survive and was in desperate need of a blood transfusion. In the final hours, we were able to assemble a transfusion kit.

Dr. Eckehart Wolff, an emergency relief doctor from HCJB Global, was not only willing to serve the wounded and injured in Haiti, but to give his own blood to save Alexis.

We give thanks and rejoice in the Lord for meeting this need and providing a source of encouragement. Amidst all the death and destruction, we serve a living God and He is performing miracles every second!

Update: Alexis later passed away from her injuries. Tuesday morning, January 19, 2010, her blood pressure started to drop. As a result her kidneys failed and her lungs collapsed. The doctors were breathing manually for her for an hour, but they simply couldn't save her. We praise God that Alexis was a Christian. Her brother, who was with her, is also a believer. After she died he said, "She is much better now and with Jesus." Then he turned to the doctors and thanked them for doing all that they had done to serve her.

You can be a part of saving lives in Haiti.

Latest Earthquake Survivor Photos from the Hospital PDF Print E-mail

In these photos, you'll see 2-year-old Celestin who had a broken leg from the earthquake. Her family is so thankful that she was able to get medical care and have her leg put in a cast so it can heal.

Celestin is just one of hundreds of earthquake survivors who have received treatment from our mission hospital in the mountains above Port-au-Prince.

Hospital patients continue to spill into the hallways as they have nowhere else to go. Our medical staff and visiting doctors are working around the clock to attend to the wounded and injured.
