A Cabbage Patch Helipad for Airlift Patients PDF Print E-mail

As the flow of new local patients begins to slow down at our mission hospital, we have begun receiving transfer from other hospitals. The US 82nd Airborne as been working closely with us to airlift patients from hospitals in and around Port-au-Prince to the BHM hospital.

The biggest challenge came not in the transport, but in the landing. We don't have a helipad, and the closest landing spot would still require a bumpy car ride to the hospital, something that can be very painful for patients with broken bones and other injuries.

But God works in mysterious ways, and has a sense of humor! A neighbor who owns a cabbage field flagged down the helicopter on its approach and, by mistake, they landed there. We couldn't ask for a more convenient location, as the field connects to our hospital with a smoothly paved road and is within walking distance.

We continue to give thanks for the generosity and kindness of neighbors who have shared their limited resources with us and others in this time of need. From a cabbage patch to a glass of cold water to critical medical care, we are all working together to "serve the least of these."
