Before January 12, 2010, Katiana was like many Haitian women. She sold food along the street to earn a little money to support her family. She had her struggles, but she was a dedicated wife and loved her family.
On that fateful day at 4:53 p.m., Katiana's world changed. She became a survivor.
When the ground began to shake, Katiana fell to the ground. A nearby wall collapsed on her and she believed for a moment that she would die. When the dust settled, she felt that she could breathe and let out a sigh of relief. She knew that God had spared her.
Blocks and mortar pinned Katiana to the ground, but she wasn't about to give up. She began pushing the chunks of concrete away with her bare hands when her hand went through the wall. She cried out to God, praying someone would hear her.
Someone did hear her cries for help. Seeing her hand peeking through, they began to dig. Katiana was rescued and taken to a local hospital, but her condition was too serious. They wouldn't be able to help her. Desperate for someone to tend to his wife, her husband brought her to our mission hospital about 14 miles away.
Katiana was suffering from a broken pelvis and major internal bleeding. Her condition was critical. Doctors, nurses, and missionaries at BHM donated their own blood in hopes of saving Katiana. Her recovery is a long one, but she is a survivor, full of life.
"I don't know what would have happened to me without this hospital. Only God knows," Katiana says. "But this hosptial has taken very good care of me."
Since arriving at the hospital, Katiana has received word that several friends and family members died in the earthquake. Her home was totally destroyed. But Katiana's heart is filled with gratitude as she looks around her.
"I am grateful for all the help people have been sending, and that people have been responding to God's will," she says. "I pray that people will continue to offer help."
Katiana knows deep in her heart that the Lord saved her because He has a purpose for her life.
"As soon as I get out of the hospital, I will go to church, especially to praise God," she says. "I pray that He will change my life and hide me under His mighty wings."
Through your faithful prayer and support, you are helping spread God's wings to shelter survivors like Katiana. Thank you!
