Question: What is the Baptist Haiti Mission?

Answer: Baptist Haiti Mission, founded over 60 years ago to bring the Good News of God's love and His plan for salvation through Jesus Christ to the people of Haiti, continues to do so today. The mission assists a network of more than 330 churches and schools, a hospital, a number of medical clinics, and many community development programs. At BHM we believe that the commitment to help Haiti begins with the spiritual need of each individual. But it doesn't end there. Along with its spiritual ministry, the mission offers education, agricultural and medical assistance and new opportunities for dependable livelihood. The ministries are varied, yet closely linked, each working with the others for a common purpose. BHM has been "serving the whole person" since 1946.

Question: What is BHM mission and vision?

Answer: Our Mission Statement "Our purpose is the propagation of the Gospel of Christ through evangelism, medical services, education and other services in the Republic of Haiti. The main activities of the mission shall be directed toward the establishment and the development of indigenous churches through evangelism and education. Our vision is to "To evangelize the soul, disciple the person, educate the mind, heal the body and restore the land for the people of Haiti."

Question: What are the key areas BHM works in?

Answer: Our work is based around six key areas that help the Haitian communities address the root causes and not just the symptoms of poverty and its consequences:

  • Evangelism: The spiritual needs of the people are our motivation for ministry. Our greatest desire is to see the people of Haiti come to know Jesus Christ as Savior.
  • Education: Education is a basic building block and the only path to achieve change and a better quality of life.
  • Health: The access  to basic health care has not always been within the reach of the people of Haiti. We are working to see that this goal is accomplished.
  • Relief: Emergency based relief due to catastrophic events such as hurricanes and flooding begins immediately following the disaster. The goal of need based relief is not only to relieve suffering but to also change the living environment so that daily circumstances improve.
  • Agriculture: This includes programs that enable farmers to achieve economic benefits through training and improved agricultural techniques.
  • Self Help: The program is designed to achieve economic benefits for families through a variety of areas including the production of handcrafts, home economics training, ornamental flower production and outlet assistance.
