Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others. (Great Minds, Jack Welch)
BHM desires to train disciples who then multiply themselves throughout the provinces of Haiti.
One of the primary goals of Baptist Haiti Mission is to come alongside the leaders of Haiti. Training courses are frequently held on the property of BHM in Fermathe. Below are some examples of the specific types of training BHM has hosted in the past and today.
Master’s Program
In partnership with Laurel University in North Carolina, men and women of Haiti are able to take courses to receive their Master Degree in Christian Education, one of the only masters programs in the country. Courses are offered in one week intervals on a variety of different subjects throughout the year. Professors from Canada and the U.S. travel to Haiti to teach. Students are provided on-campus housing during the time of this training. After the week, the students are given assignments and deadlines to complete over the next several weeks.
Summer Bible Institute
The Summer Bible Institute (SBI) takes place every summer for 2 months. The participants in the SBI are actively involved in ministry as pastors and lay pastors. Many lay pastors do not have a formal education. SBI enables church leaders to be trained and equipped in the scriptures and church leadership. During this time participants stay in the conference center on the Mission property and take a variety of classes.
A student must be a member of the SBI for 4 summers and pass all of the courses to receive their certificate of completion. This program provides the pastors and lay pastors with the training they need to effectively serve their church family. SBI has been a part of the ministries of BHM since 1950. We praise God for the training these pastors receive, which instructs them in the importance of thinking in a Biblical manner. SBI has proven to be a great opportunity for church leaders to fellowship and share resources.
Conferences
VBS Training
When schools in Haiti go on summer break the churches of Haiti are still heavily involved in the lives of the children. Those in charge of children’s ministry at their church receive training for leading Vacation Bible School each year. They are provided with new stories, songs, and creative ideas to implement in their own unique ways as they lead their children.
ABWE
The Association of Baptist for World Evangelism partners with BHM from hosting medical clinics to training church leaders. They recently produced a curriculum in Haitian Creole which consists of pictures and stories for teaching the entire Bible, while displaying how the Bible points to Christ. There were training sessions for lay pastors and Sunday School teachers to learn how to use the curriculum and implement it into their schools.
ACSI
The Association of Christian Schools International travels to Haiti quite often and provides training for school teachers. The trainings always consists of the importance of teaching from a Biblical perspective. These training sessions focus on one particular subject, mathematics, science, etc. and demonstrate how to teach with a Christian Worldview.
